helicoptertours.com review: Maui reseller, what it adds, what to check

helicoptertours.com is a booking agency, not a helicopter company. It says so itself: a full-service tour operator and agency with an address in Wailuku, Maui, that sells only helicopter tours, on Maui and across Hawaiʻi, Las Vegas and several mainland and Canadian destinations. The Maui flights it lists are the Kahului Heliport operators' flights, at the operators' prices on the ones we checked, with a phone desk, transport and seat add-ons layered on top. That is a reasonable service; the job for you is to identify the operator and the cancellation window before you pay.

What helicoptertours.com is

The About page traces the business to a family travel agency that started booking Hawaiʻi trips in the 1940s and says the team is spread across the world with roots in Hawaiʻi. It lists a Wailuku address, a phone line staffed daily from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Hawaiʻi time, and a pitch built on three things: only helicopter tours are sold, staff will match you to the right flight for your group, and you can combine flights with other activities. Its catalogue covers Oʻahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kauaʻi, Las Vegas, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Quebec and Ontario.

For a Maui visitor the practical difference from booking direct is the human layer: someone to call about weights, seating, a group of eight or a plan that includes Kauaʻi the following week.

The Maui catalogue and who flies it

The Maui page groups flights into Hāna and Haleakalā, complete-island and West Maui and Molokai collections. When we checked, it showed the Doors Off West Maui & Molokai flight from $430, the West Maui & Molokai Special from $330, a 50-minute Hāna rainforest flight from $459, 60-minute flights from $440 and $540, a 90-minute flight on a "6 Passenger Airbus EC130 Eco-Star" from $611, a 75-minute oceanfront landing from $409 (weekdays only), a Molokai flight from $319, a rainforest landing with champagne toast from $360, a Road to Hāna air-and-land combination from $548 and a 12-hour inter-island day from $989 (prices checked regularly; all according to helicoptertours.com).

The operator is not in the headline. On the doors-off page it appears in the rules: only cell phones on board, no hats or loose items, closed-toe shoes, long hair tied back, and a jacket that Air Maui provides and requires every passenger to wear. That matches the rules Air Maui publishes on its own site (see our Air Maui review), and the flight is the one on our doors-off page. For other flights, read the rules and the aircraft line: Air Maui flies the Airbus AS350 AStar, so a listing that names an Airbus EC130 Eco-Star, as the 90-minute flight does, points to another operator, such as Blue Hawaiian, whose Maui fleet includes the Eco-Star, or Maverick, which flies the Airbus 130 from Kahului. If a page leaves you unsure, ask the desk before you book; that is what it is there for.

Same aircraft, same pilots, same heliport. The reseller matches the operator to the cent on this flight; GetYourGuide is $22 more and shows live time slots and its own cancellation terms on the listing. Where the site adds cost is in the extras you choose: a Front Seat Guarantee at $200 per pair, sold only as a pair and only if the two of you weigh 380 lb or less combined, and round-trip transportation at $276 per group of up to five or $450 for six to fourteen.

Cancellation: read the tour page, not the summary

The refund policy page is candid that its rules vary. It says you can cancel for a full refund with more than 7 days' notice, that most tours carry a 72-hour policy that a vendor may extend to 7 days in busy periods, and that there are no refunds inside 72 hours or for tours bought within 72 hours of departure. The doors-off tour page, however, states that changes and cancellations are allowed up to 48 hours before the flight without penalty, with 7 days for groups of twelve or more. Full refunds are promised if the agency or operator cancels for safety, staffing or equipment reasons, which covers the weather calls pilots make on the day.

Weight: the site's line versus the operator's rule

The refund page says guests over 240 lb are charged extra at check-in and quotes an approximate 35% fuel fee. The doors-off booking form asks for each passenger's weight and states a comfort-seat charge at 230 lb or more, or 400 lb combined. Air Maui's own FAQ sets its doors-off comfort seat at 230 lb for one passenger, 400 lb combined for two, a 190 lb average for three or more and for anyone over 250 lb, according to airmaui.com. The operator's scale and rule are what apply at the heliport, so use our weight rules page as the reference and treat the site's figures as a prompt to check.

How it compares with other resellers

mauihelicoptertours.com is the closest comparison: a Lahaina-based concierge agency selling Air Maui, Blue Hawaiian and Maverick flights with its own 72-hour rule. helicoptertours.com is broader geographically and narrower in product, and it puts more of the practical rules on the page. The doors-off flight is Air Maui's, at the same $430 the operator shows, so you lose nothing on price and gain a booking desk that also covers Kauaʻi, Oʻahu and the Big Island. The two published cancellation windows differ, and its policy page says the tour page decides.

Skip it if you only need one Maui flight and can drive to Kahului yourself; booking direct or on GetYourGuide is simpler.
