Maui helicopter tours weight limit: every operator's rule explained

The Maui helicopter tours weight limit is the one detail most booking pages bury and most check-in desks enforce. Every operator flying from the Kahului Heliport puts you on a scale before you board. The number that triggers a charge differs by company and by whether the doors are on or off: Air Maui asks for a comfort seat from 230 lb per person or 400 lb per pair on its doors-off flight, and from 240 lb or 420 lb with the doors on; Maverick draws a flat line at 275 lb; Blue Hawaiian does not publish a general threshold at all. You are not refused. You pay for the empty seat next to you, and that can add several hundred dollars to a $396–452 flight.

Why you get weighed at all

A tour helicopter is a small, single-engine turbine aircraft with a strict maximum takeoff weight and a center of gravity that has to stay inside a narrow envelope. Airlines can load passengers using average weights because a cabin of 180 people averages out. A cabin of six does not. The FAA's guidance on weight and balance says plainly that using standard average weights in single-engine turbine aircraft would be unsafe, so Maui operators run actual-weight programs: a scale at check-in, or your stated weight plus a clothing allowance.

That is also why the pilot, not you, decides who sits where. The heaviest passengers tend to go to the middle of the rear bench, where they affect balance least; lighter passengers get the window and front seats. Paying for a comfort seat buys an empty seat beside you, not a better view.

The rules, operator by operator

Weight check

Every operator flying from the Kahului Heliport weighs passengers at check-in and assigns seats for weight and balance. Above the published threshold you buy a second, empty seat (a 'comfort seat'). Rules below are quoted from each operator's own site; the scale on the day decides.

Thresholds are quoted verbatim from operator pages and change without notice. If you are within 10 lb of a line, expect the charge: operators weigh you in your clothes and shoes, and the FAA tells them to round up, not down.

Air Maui: the pair and the group average are the traps

Air Maui is the operator behind the doors-off flight sold on GetYourGuide, the only shared-cabin doors-off flight on the island, and it publishes the most detailed policy. Three tests apply, and any one of them triggers the comfort seat. For doors-off flights: one passenger at 230 lb or more (its FAQ wording), two passengers totaling 400 lb or more, or a group of three or more averaging 190 lb. The tour page adds a hard line: anyone over 250 lb needs a comfort seat on the doors-off flight regardless of the pair total. With the doors on, the same three tests sit at 240 lb, 420 lb and a 200 lb average.

The pair rule is what catches couples. Two people at 205 lb each are individually fine on any flight, but together they are 410 lb, which is over the doors-off pair rule. Air Maui says the charge applies; it does not say how much on any page we could find. Ask when you book, or budget for a second seat at the tour price, according to airmaui.com $429.99 direct for the doors-off flight.

Blue Hawaiian: no published per-seat rule

Blue Hawaiian flies Maui with the Airbus AS350 A-Star and the larger EC130 Eco-Star, and its FAQ describes seating set by an "FAA approved weight and balance program" without giving a general weight threshold. What it does publish are the limits for the paid front-row upgrade: on the Maui tour pages the pair must be under 470 lb and each passenger 240 lb, with the upgrade fee refunded if the scale disagrees. Its wheelchair lift is rated to 250 lb. Third-party resellers quote a comfort-seat rule for Blue Hawaiian; we could not find that wording on bluehawaiian.com, so treat it as something to confirm by phone rather than a fact. Its tours start from $419 direct, according to bluehawaiian.com.

Maverick: one number, 275 lb

Maverick Helicopters has the simplest published rule for Maui: 275 lb (124 kg, 19 st) per person, and above it "guests exceeding the limit must purchase an additional seat." There is no pair rule, but Maverick reserves the right to enforce a maximum per helicopter by season, and warns that inaccurately stated weights may be cancelled without refund. Seating is computer-generated from the scale and not finalized until check-in, so it does not promise to seat a party together. Maui flights are listed from $399 direct, according to maverickhelicopter.com.

Pacific Helicopter Tours and Sunshine

Pacific Helicopter Tours works differently: it sells the whole three-seat MD500, doors on or off, so there is no comfort seat, just a 750 lb limit for the group combined. Its Complete Island private flight is $2,175 for one to three passengers, according to tours.pacifichelicoptershawaii.com. Sunshine Helicopters has no current rule to quote: the company filed for Chapter 7 liquidation, its aircraft were auctioned and its domain no longer serves a tour site. An old Sunshine voucher cannot be flown on Maui.

Air Maui sells the two front seats as a pair ($100 per person, 380 lb combined); Blue Hawaiian's front-row upgrade needs under 470 lb for the pair and 240 lb per person on Maui.

On the doors-off flight the two rear window seats are the 'edge seats' with nothing beside you; Air Maui requires edge-seat passengers to be 16 or older.

Blue Hawaiian also flies the Airbus EC130 Eco-Star on Maui (a wider cabin with a different front row; Maverick describes its own Eco-Stars as seven passenger seats); Pacific Helicopter Tours' MD500 has one front and two rear seats. The heavier passengers usually end up in the middle of the rear bench.

The seat map is the honest answer to "can we sit together": usually, but the scale decides. If the front row matters to you, both Air Maui and Blue Hawaiian sell it as an upgrade with its own, stricter weight limits (380 lb combined at Air Maui; under 470 lb combined and 240 lb per person at Blue Hawaiian on Maui), and both refund the upgrade rather than the flight if the scale says no.

Doors-off adds item rules on top of weight rules

On Air Maui's doors-off flight the weight thresholds are lower and the cabin rules are stricter. Only your phone comes aboard, in a lanyard case the crew supplies; GoPros and cameras are refused. No hats, bags or loose items, no sarongs, dresses or loose cover-ups, closed-toe shoes only (the FAQ accepts sandals strapped at the ankle or heel), long hair tied up, and a supplied jacket worn for the flight. Minimum age is 10, edge seats 16 and over, and anyone aged 10 to 18 flies with an adult. Children, lap infants, pregnancy

A child who has reached their second birthday must occupy their own paid seat; Air Maui calls this an FAA requirement, and Maverick applies the same split. Under two, a child flies on an adult's lap at no charge at both, but a lap child is never allowed in the front row at Blue Hawaiian. Maverick requires anyone 17 and under to fly with a parent or guardian; Air Maui's doors-on flights are "all ages" while the doors-off is 10 and over. None of the operator FAQ pages we read publishes a pregnancy rule; that is a phone call, not an assumption.

What it costs, and what happens if you say no

The comfort seat is paid to the operator at check-in, not through GetYourGuide, whose listing price is per seat. Air Maui does not publish the figure. Maverick's wording, "an additional seat", points to a second seat at the tour price. Because the three 45-minute Maui flights sold on GetYourGuide carry Air Maui's tour names, the practical planning number for a solo passenger over the line is roughly double the per-seat price below; a couple over the pair rule needs one extra seat between them, not two.

If you decline the comfort seat at the counter, you do not fly, and the operator's cancellation terms apply: Air Maui allows no refunds or rescheduling within 48 hours, Blue Hawaiian within 24 hours, Maverick within 72 hours. That is the real risk of guessing low: not the scale, but the money. How to avoid the surprise

Two more practical points. First, the scale reads you dressed, so a doors-off flight in a supplied jacket and closed shoes weighs more than you do at home. Second, if you are traveling as a group of three or more, the average is what counts at Air Maui: one heavier friend can be offset by a lighter one, or can push the whole group over.

The short version

If you and your travel partner are each under about 195 lb, no Maui operator's published rule touches you. Between 195 and 240 lb, check the pair total for Air Maui and read the row for your operator. Over 250 lb, plan on a comfort seat with Air Maui, one at 275 lb with Maverick, and call Blue Hawaiian. Nobody publishes an absolute maximum for a shared flight, and a private MD500 with a 750 lb group allowance is the fallback. The Maui helicopter tours weight limit is a cost, not a closed door: know your number, add up the pair, and book the flight with the rule you can live with.
