What you see, minute by minute

Air Maui describes the circle as starting north over the West Maui Mountains, crossing the central valley to Haleakalā, dropping into the rainforest and the Hāna coastline and arcing back to Kahului. The log below follows that order with approximate times; pilots reverse it when the cloud says so. Departure is the Kahului Heliport next to Kahului Airport (OGG), airtime 60 minutes.

   The wettest part of West Maui: knife-edge ridges, cloud forest, the amphitheater walls locals call the Wall of Tears when they run. Cloud decides how deep you go.

The difference from a 45-minute flight is not that each sight gets longer. It is that you get both mountains. West Maui is the older, steeper, more eroded range, all narrow valleys and ridgelines; Haleakalā is one enormous shield with a summit depression you could lose a town in. Seeing them twenty minutes apart is the point of the circle, and it is why first-time visitors who will only fly once tend to book it.

Read the table across, not down. The circle is not a longer Hāna flight; it is the Hāna flight plus the West Maui half of the Molokai flight, with the channel crossing and the sea cliffs removed. If Molokai's cliffs are on your list, the circle will not tick them; if the crater is, the Spectacular will not. Nothing under 90 minutes gives you all three, and nothing on Maui lands you inside Haleakalā National Park.

On names: "Spectacular" belongs to Blue Hawaiian's 90-minute landing tour, "Complete Island" to Air Maui's 60-minute circle (Pacific Helicopter Tours uses the same name for a 90-minute private flight), and "Maui Dream" to nobody's current price list. Third-party sites reuse these labels loosely, so match the minutes and the sights rather than the title before you pay.

Doors on, aircraft and seats

Every shared-cabin version of the circle flies doors on; only Pacific Helicopter Tours' private three-seat flight offers a door off. Air Maui's aircraft is the Airbus AS350 AStar, marketed as the "American Eurocopter ASTAR", six forward-facing passenger seats, air conditioning and noise-reducing headsets, according to airmaui.com. Doors on matters more on a 60-minute flight than a 45: you spend longer at crater altitude, and the wind fatigue that makes doors-off exhilarating for 45 minutes would be wearing at 60.

Blue Hawaiian also flies the larger Airbus EC130 Eco-Star on Maui, according to bluehawaiian.com.

Weight and balance, not preference, decide where you sit. Air Maui sells the two front seats as a pair for $100 per person with a 380 lb combined limit; otherwise you find out at check-in. On a full circle the disappointment of a middle seat is smaller than on a one-way coastal run, because the aircraft turns through every heading and the pilot banks toward the sights.

When to fly the circle

The 60-minute route has a weather problem the 45-minute routes do not: it needs two mountains open at once. West Maui's summit and Haleakalā's windward slope both collect trade-wind cloud through the morning, so the earliest departures are the ones most likely to fly the whole loop as drawn. Later in the day the pilot may fly the clear side in full and shorten the other. Winter means fuller waterfalls in both ranges and more rain days; summer means clearer air and thinner falls. A 60-minute loop crosses two mountains with different weather. Trade-wind cloud builds on both through the day; the pilot may fly the clear one first. Typical pattern, not a forecast.

Who the circle is not for

Weight. Air Maui's Complete Island page publishes the rule: a comfort seat is required at a combined 420 lb for two passengers or a 200 lb average for groups of three or more; the FAQ adds 240 lb for a single passenger on doors-on flights. The comfort seat is a second fare, which at $484.99 makes this the route where the rule costs most. Check the table and the weight rules page before you book.

Age. All ages, according to airmaui.com, with the FAA rule that a child who has turned two occupies a paid seat, under-twos as lap children, and under-13s accompanied by an adult. Sixty minutes is long for a small child in a headset; the 45-minute Hāna and Haleakalā flight is the kinder choice for families with toddlers.

Motion sickness. This is the route with the most turning: two valley systems, a crater entry and exit, a coastline of headlands. If you are sensitive, take a non-drowsy remedy an hour before, eat lightly, and consider the straighter West Maui and Molokai run instead.

Pregnancy and medical. Maverick's FAQ says pregnant guests may fly and recommends checking with a doctor first; Air Maui and Blue Hawaiian publish no pregnancy rule on their tour pages, so ask before booking. Maverick and Blue Hawaiian both require 24 hours between scuba diving and flying, according to their FAQs.

GetYourGuide's only listing longer than 50 minutes at a shared-cabin price is the 90-minute Maui and Molokai Spectacular at $611: West Maui valleys, Molokai's north shore, then a 20-minute landing with refreshments at Ulupalakua Ranch on Haleakalā's slopes. Its name, duration and landing site match Blue Hawaiian's tour of the same name, which is $559 direct according to bluehawaiian.com; the listing does not name the operator, so read your voucher. That flight is a different proposition from the circle: Molokai instead of Hāna, ground time instead of the crater.

The 60-minute doors-on circle itself is a direct booking. Air Maui shows $484.99 with a $574.99 list price struck through, according to airmaui.com. Against the 45-minute flights below, the circle costs about $90 more than the two doors-on routes' GetYourGuide price and $115 more than Air Maui's own 45-minute Hāna and Haleakalā fare.

Booking direct means Air Maui's terms: 30-minute check-in, no refunds or rescheduling within 48 hours of flight time, weather cancellations rebooked or refunded. Booking the Spectacular on GetYourGuide means the platform's terms on top, which is the main reason to pay its premium. The prices page covers Costco, Groupon and what "discount" means on each.

Operators flying the whole island

Air Maui is the only operator we can verify selling a 60-minute Maui circle under the "Complete Island" name: West Maui Mountains, Haleakalā, Hāna coast, six seats, all ages, $484.99. Its tours list also shows a 60-minute West Maui and Molokai flight for people who would rather trade Hāna for the sea cliffs.

Blue Hawaiian no longer lists a Complete Island tour on its Maui page. Its four current flights are the 50-minute Waterfalls of West Maui and Molokai, a 50-minute Haleakalā and West Maui Mountains flight, the 50-minute Hāna Rainforest and the 90-minute Spectacular with landing, all from Kahului, according to bluehawaiian.com. The 50-minute Haleakalā and West Maui flight at $419 is the closest thing to a shorter circle: both mountains, no Hāna coast.

Maverick Helicopters sells a 65-minute Hawaiian Odyssey from $499, according to maverickhelicopter.com, but it is a three-island flight over Maui, Molokai and Lānaʻi, not a Maui circle; GetYourGuide's 3-Island Hawaiian Odyssey listing matches it by name and duration but shows $3,353 per person, so read what that price covers before booking it. Pacific Helicopter Tours sells its own "Complete Island": 90 minutes in a private three-seat MD500 at $2,175 per aircraft, doors on or off, according to tours.pacifichelicoptershawaii.com. Sunshine Helicopters is the other name you will see in older guides. Its website no longer serves an operator site and its aircraft, vehicles and parts were sold at auction by order of the US Bankruptcy Court, so treat any Sunshine price or route you find elsewhere as historical; the review has the details.

Getting to the Kahului Heliport

All of these flights leave from the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG); the exact check-in address is on your voucher because each operator has its own building on the field. Air Maui's own directions allow 30–45 minutes from Kīhei or Wailea and 60–70 minutes from Lahaina, Kāʻanapali or Kapalua; add the 30-minute check-in. The heliport lot is privately run with a self-service pay booth, according to maverickhelicopter.com.
