You climb into the West Maui Mountains, cross the Pailolo Channel to a second island and follow the north shore of Molokai, where the U.S. Geological Survey measures the sea cliffs at 3,000 to 4,000 ft and calls them the highest in the world. Then you come home the same way.

What you see, minute by minute

The log below is typical, not a timetable. Pilots change the order and the depth of the valleys with the cloud, and Air Maui says plainly that routes vary with weather. Treat the minute marks as a guide to how the 45 minutes are spent.

The flight splits into three roughly equal parts. The first fifteen minutes are the West Maui Mountains: the aircraft lifts off at the Kahului Heliport, crosses the flat central plain in a couple of minutes and enters Īao Valley, then works through the interior valleys. This is the part that changes most with the season: after winter rain the walls run with waterfalls; in a dry August you see the same ridges with far less water.

The middle third is the crossing. West Maui's coast drops behind, the Pailolo Channel opens up, and Molokai grows from a line on the horizon to a wall. On a winter flight this is where you look down for humpback whales; the channel is part of their breeding grounds and you sometimes see them from 1,500 ft. Do not book the flight for whales. Book a boat for whales and take the whales as a bonus.

The last third is Molokai. The north shore has no road and no town; the cliffs rise straight out of the ocean, the valleys cut miles inland and waterfalls fall in long lines that often turn to mist before they reach the sea. Pilots call it the Lost World. Then the pilot turns, recrosses the channel and sets down at Kahului about 45 minutes after lift-off.

Kalaupapa and what the 45 minutes do not cover

The cliff line runs from Molokai's east end west to the Kalaupapa peninsula. The 45-minute flight covers the eastern stretch of that line and turns for home; Kalaupapa itself is not a published waypoint of the short flight, and no tour lands on Molokai. The peninsula below is Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the former Hansen's disease settlement, and the National Park Service restricts ground access to permitted guided tours, with no visitors under 16. The park describes the cliffs that walled it off as about 2,000 ft. If seeing the whole shore matters, the 60-minute version of the route buys more Molokai time.

Doors on, the aircraft and the seats

The GetYourGuide listing for this route is a doors-on flight in a six-passenger cabin. The doors-off version, the only shared-cabin doors-off flight on Maui (Pacific Helicopter Tours removes doors only on private three-seat flights), is a separate listing at $451.99 and has its own rules: read the doors-off page before choosing. Doors on means glass between you and the cliffs, a quieter, warmer cabin, and a flight open to all ages.

Air Maui flies what it calls the American Eurocopter ASTAR, the AS350 family. Every seat faces forward, the cabin is air-conditioned and there are no partitions, so the middle seats in the back still see out through the bubble. Blue Hawaiian flies the same route with a mix of the Airbus EC130 Eco-Star and the AS350 A-Star, according to bluehawaiian.com; Maverick's Molokai Voyage runs about 55 minutes from the same heliport.

Wear dark, plain clothing: light colors and patterns reflect in the windows and end up in your photos.

Two things about seating that catch people out. First, you do not pick your seat: the operator loads the aircraft by weight and balance and tells you where to sit. Second, the front pair is a paid upgrade when it is offered at all. Air Maui sells the two front seats only as a pair, $100 per person, with a 380 lb combined limit, and only when you book direct. If a front seat is the point of the flight, book direct and ask.

When to fly

Fly in the morning. The trade winds push cloud onto the West Maui summits through the day, so a 7:30 departure usually sees deeper into the valleys than a 1:30 one, and afternoon flights are the ones most often shortened or cancelled. Winter brings fuller waterfalls and whales in the channel (NOAA puts humpback season at November through May, peaking January to March); summer brings drier, clearer air and thinner falls. Sky by time of day

Typical trade-wind pattern, not a forecast. Pilots decide on the day; Air Maui says cloud cover is its usual reason for cancelling, because the clouds are the ceiling.

Air Maui decides weather on the day, not from the forecast, because the rainforest areas it flies into get over 400 inches of rain a year and a rainy day is often still flyable. Who this flight is not for

Weight. Helicopters are weight-sensitive and every operator weighs passengers at check-in. On Air Maui's doors-on flights a comfort seat is charged when one passenger weighs 240 lb or more, when two passengers together weigh 420 lb or more, or when a group of three or more averages 200 lb or more. A comfort seat is a second seat at the regular fare. Blue Hawaiian publishes 240 lb per person and 470 lb combined for its front row. Full tables and a calculator are on the weight rules page.

Age. All ages fly doors on. A child who has had their second birthday needs a paid seat (an FAA rule); younger children fly as lap children free of charge. Under-13s must be with an adult on Air Maui.

Pregnancy and health. Operators do not publish a pregnancy ban for doors-on flights, but the cabin is small, the belts are tight and there is nowhere to stop. Ask your doctor, then the operator.

Motion sickness. This is a smooth flight compared with a boat, but it turns and descends into valleys. If you get sick in cars, eat lightly, take your usual remedy an hour before and ask for a seat where you can see the horizon. The front and the window seats are easier than the middle.

The 50-minute Waterfalls of West Maui and Molokai listing matches Blue Hawaiian's tour of the same name, which bluehawaiian.com prices from $419 direct. Air Maui's 60-minute West Maui and Molokai is $484.99 direct and is not on GetYourGuide. None of these adds new ground; they add time in the Molokai valleys.

Direct prices are as shown on each operator's site when we checked. Air Maui's own FAQ sums up the 45-versus-60 question in one line: the 60-minute tour flies over more areas. In practice that means a longer run along the Molokai cliffs and more of the West Maui interior, not a different destination. If money is tight, the 45-minute flight is the right call; if you have flown this route before and want to see further west along the cliff line, the hour is the upgrade.

Photos through the glass

Doors on means glass, and glass means reflections. Air Maui's advice is to wear dark clothing without patterns so that your own shirt does not appear in every frame. Press the lens close to the window without touching it, turn off the flash and shoot at a fast shutter speed; the aircraft is steadier than a boat but it is never still. Operators flying this route

Three companies fly West Maui and Molokai from the Kahului Heliport. Air Maui is the local operator named as activity provider on archived copies of the 45-minute GetYourGuide listing and the only one of the three with a doors-off version. Blue Hawaiian is the multi-island chain; its 50-minute version uses the Eco-Star and A-Star. Maverick sells the route as the Molokai Voyage at about 55 minutes from $399. All Hawaii air tours fly under FAA Part 136 rules, which keep them at or above 1,500 ft except for takeoff and landing and require floats or flotation gear on single-engine helicopters beyond the shoreline. Getting to Kahului

Every flight on this route leaves from the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG); the exact check-in address is on your voucher. Air Maui tells drivers to allow 60 to 70 minutes from Lahaina, Kāʻanapali and Kapalua and 30 to 45 minutes from Kīhei and Wailea, and asks you to arrive 30 minutes before the flight. Nobody picks you up at the resorts: Maverick states it has no hotel transfers, and neither Air Maui nor Blue Hawaiian publishes one.
