Blue Hawaiian Helicopters Maui review: routes, Eco-Star, rules

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters calls itself the largest helicopter tour company in Hawaii and the only one serving all four main islands, but on Maui it is a four-route operation out of the Kahului Heliport: three doors-on flights of about 50 minutes from $419 direct and a 90-minute tour that lands at Ulupalakua Ranch for $559. It suits people who want a bigger cabin than Air Maui's six-seater, a landing without a charter price, or the same brand they flew on Kauai. Price level: upper-middle for Maui.

What Blue Hawaiian Helicopters actually is

The company started on Kauai in 1982 as South Sea Helicopters and took the Blue Hawaiian name in 1985 when its Maui branch was sold, according to the FAQ on bluehawaiian.com. Today it has bases on Oʻahu, Maui, Kauai and at both Hilo and Waikoloa on the Big Island, and it is a subsidiary of Air Methods Corporation, the US air-medical group that also owns Sundance Helicopters in Las Vegas.

On safety it publishes more than anyone else on the island: a voluntary FAA Safety Management System, an Aviation Safety Action Program, membership of the Tour Operators Program of Safety with external audits, and its own flight simulator for recurrent pilot training. Every pilot is also required to hold State of Hawaii Certified Tour Guide certification, so narration is part of the product rather than an afterthought. Like every tour operator flying from Kahului, it is subject to the FAA's Hawaii air-tour rules.

Routes, aircraft and rules on Maui

All four Maui tours depart the Blue Hawaiian base at 1 Lelepio Place at the Kahului Heliport. Durations and prices below are Blue Hawaiian's own "starting from" figures on the day we checked.

Two client-sheet claims did not survive checking. There is no "Complete Island" tour on the current Maui list; the closest is the Haleakalā + West Maui tour, which does not fly the Hāna coast. And there is no Maui-to-Big-Island volcano flight: the FAQ is explicit that flowing lava is only ever seen on Big Island departures over Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Maui flights use both the Airbus EC130 Eco-Star and the AS350 AStar; you find out which at check-in. Blue Hawaiian says neither type has a cabin partition between the rows, so every seat gets a view; the Eco-Star is the newer design it markets hardest, and the company claims the largest Eco-Star fleet in Hawaii without giving a number.

Weight, seats and the front-row upgrade

Blue Hawaiian does not publish a per-passenger weight limit or a comfort-seat charge on its public pages; if a limit applies it appears in the booking flow, so state accurate weights when you reserve. Seats are set by an FAA-approved weight-and-balance program, and the site is honest that couples are seated together when possible, not guaranteed.

Front-row seats can be reserved for a fee. On the Maui tour pages the caps are 470 lb combined and 240 lb per person (the general FAQ quotes 319 lb combined and 250 lb per person for AStar flights, 470 and 260 for the Eco-Star, so expect the stricter figure). At least one front-seat passenger must be 15 or older, able to take instructions in English and physically able to operate the exit door in an emergency; lap children cannot sit in front. If check-in weights exceed the cap you are moved back and the upgrade fee refunded. A chair lift for wheelchair users is available at the Maui base, rated to 250 lb, rear row only. What it costs and how to book

Three GetYourGuide listings carry Blue Hawaiian's exact Maui tour names and durations, and archived copies of the listing pages show "Blue Hawaiian Helicopters" on the activity-provider line (the live pages block automated reading). They cost more than direct but come with free cancellation up to 24 hours before:

Direct saves $40 on the 50-minute flights and $52 on the Spectacular, according to bluehawaiian.com, but Blue Hawaiian charges the full fare for any change or no-show inside 24 hours, and changes must be made by phone between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Hawaii time. Weather cancellations by the pilot are rebooked or refunded in full whichever way you booked. The practical detail

Check in 45 minutes before departure. Wear solid dark clothing to cut window reflections, leave hats in the car (they are not allowed near the rotors) and bring closed-toe shoes if you are landing, which the FAQ asks for on landing tours. No scuba within 24 hours or SNUBA within 12 hours of the flight. Every flight is filmed by four cameras, three outside and one in the cabin, with the pilot's narration and music mixed in; the video is sold when you land, price not published. Blue Hawaiian's advice is to book early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be rescheduled, and its FAQ says time of day makes no difference most days; our best time page explains why we still prefer mornings.

Blue Hawaiian vs Air Maui and Maverick

Air Maui is cheaper ($369.99 direct for 45 minutes), publishes its weight rules to the pound and runs the only shared-cabin doors-off flight, but flies a smaller six-seat AStar. Maverick Helicopters undercuts Blue Hawaiian at $399 for 55 minutes in a seven-seat Airbus 130 and lands in the Hāna rainforest with champagne on its 75-minute tour, with a 72-hour cancellation window. Blue Hawaiian wins on the landing tour price, on published safety programs and on cabin choice. Searchers who type "blue hawaian" or "blue helicopter maui" are looking for this company.

Our call

Book Blue Hawaiian for the Maui and Molokai Spectacular if you want to land, or for a 50-minute route when Air Maui's 45-minute slots are gone.

The Spectacular is the only scheduled Maui flight that pairs the Molokai cliffs with a 20-minute ranch stop and refreshments, and Blue Hawaiian says neither of its cabin types has a partition to block the view. You pay roughly $50 more than Air Maui for five more minutes on the doors-on routes.

Skip it if you want doors off, a Kīlauea flight from Maui (Blue Hawaiian does not fly one), or you might need to cancel inside 24 hours.
