Maverick Helicopters Maui review: routes, 275 lb rule, prices

Maverick Helicopters is the Las Vegas tour giant's Maui outpost, and yes, it is still flying: three scheduled routes from the Kahului Heliport at $399 to $499 direct, all in seven-seat Airbus 130s, none doors off. It suits people who want a landing (the 75-minute Hana Rainforest Experience stops for about 30 minutes with a champagne toast), a three-island flight that adds Lānaʻi, or simply a bigger cabin than Air Maui's AStar. Price level: middle of the Maui market, with the most generous published weight rule.

What Maverick Helicopters actually is

Maverick started in Las Vegas in 1995 with one helicopter and grew into one of the largest tour-flying companies in the world, according to maverickhelicopter.com; it now runs seven locations across Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and California. The Maui base is its only Hawaii operation on the current site. The company does not publish when it opened on Maui; its latest FAA Diamond Award of Excellence press release counts eleven consecutive awards for the Hawaii operation, which is consistent with a mid-2010s start on Maui.

Reservations run through Las Vegas phone numbers and the styling is Vegas too: a gift shop, a group photo in front of the aircraft sold as a plaque, a "VIP-level experience" pitch on the company page. What you get on Maui is a well-drilled, premium-positioned version of the same three routes the local operators fly, plus a landing site none of them has.

Routes, aircraft and rules

Everything departs the Kahului Heliport (GPS address Lelepio Place, Kahului). Prices are Maverick's "from" figures on the day we checked; the site warns they move with season and demand and offers to match a lower price found elsewhere.

Note the Hana Rainforest Experience is mostly ground time: about 40 minutes in the air split into two legs, and half an hour beside a stream in a landing zone with no restrooms. The aircraft is the Airbus 130 (the EC130 and its successor the H130), which Maverick says it operates in the world's largest fleet. Up to seven passengers sit in what Maverick calls theater-style individual seats, with air conditioning and active vibration control. Seating is computer-generated from weights at check-in, so parties may be split across rows.

Weight, age and health rules, as published

Maverick's rule is one number: 275 lb (124 kg, 19 st) per person on Maui flights. Above it you purchase an additional seat. You give approximate weights when booking, everyone is weighed on arrival, and the terms say inaccurately stated weights can mean a delay or a cancellation with no refund, so be honest at booking rather than hopeful. That is simpler and more generous than Air Maui's 240 lb doors-on threshold; our weight restrictions page has the full table.

Children under two fly on a lap with proof of age; from the second birthday they need a paid seat, and anyone 17 or under must fly with a parent or guardian. Pregnant passengers are welcome, with the usual advice to check with a doctor. Wait 24 hours after scuba diving. Adults must show a physical REAL ID or passport at check-in; digital copies are refused.

What it costs and how to book

Book direct on maverickhelicopter.com for the published $399 to $499 per-seat fares. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before departure and impossible after that, with no-shows charged in full; if weather grounds the flight you are rebooked or refunded. Check-in is 30 minutes before departure.

GetYourGuide carries three Maui listings whose names and durations match Maverick's tours exactly: a 75-minute Road to Hāna flight with landing, a 55-minute two-island flight to Molokai and a 65-minute 3-Island Hawaiian Odyssey. They are priced at $2,303 to $3,353, shown per person, with a minimum age of 13, while an archived copy of the Hāna listing showed $329 per person; we cannot tell you what the live price covers, so read the listing's inclusions and participant count before comparing it with the direct fare.

The practical detail

Parking at the Kahului Heliport is a private lot run by ABM with a self-service pay booth that takes Visa, Mastercard and cash without change. Maverick does not run hotel transfers; arrange your own ride (see from Lahaina and Wailea). Flights run from early morning to mid-afternoon, no sunset slots. Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes; the FAQ suggests sunglasses and sunscreen depending on the flight and season. Cameras and GoPros are allowed, flash is not; only bottled water may come aboard, and photography on the ramp is not permitted until after landing. A group photo is taken in front of the helicopter before boarding and sold as a plaque.

Maverick vs Blue Hawaiian and Air Maui

Blue Hawaiian charges $419 for about 50 minutes on the Molokai route, $20 more for a few minutes less than Maverick's Voyage, but its landing tour at Ulupalakua Ranch is $559 against Maverick's $399 rainforest stop; Blue Hawaiian's cancellation window is 24 hours to Maverick's 72. Air Maui is the budget and doors-off option at $369.99 for 45 minutes, with a stricter weight rule. Maverick sits between them: newer, bigger aircraft and the friendliest weight policy, at the cost of the least flexible cancellation.

Book Maverick direct for the Hana Rainforest Experience if a landing with a glass of champagne is the point, or the Hawaiian Odyssey if you want Lānaʻi in the same flight.

At $399 for 55 minutes it undercuts Blue Hawaiian on the Molokai route in a bigger cabin, its 275 lb rule is the most generous published on Maui, and its terms are stated plainly. The trade is the longest cancellation lock-in of the three operators and no doors-off option.
