Maui helicopter tours with landing: Ulupalakua, Hāna, oceanfront

Maui helicopter tours with landing add one thing the fly-overs cannot: rotors stopped, doors open, twenty or thirty minutes standing somewhere you could not otherwise reach. Three shared-cabin tours from the Kahului Heliport do it. Blue Hawaiian's Maui and Molokai Spectacular runs about 90 minutes, doors on, six passengers, with a 20-minute stop at Ulupalakua Ranch on Haleakalā's slopes, from $611 on GetYourGuide or $559 direct. Maverick's Hāna Rainforest Experience lands in the East Maui rainforest for about 30 minutes, from $399 direct. Air Maui's West Maui and Molokai with Oceanfront Landing is a 75-minute event with a stop on its private pad on Maui's north shore, $453.74 direct. Prices are checked regularly.

The log below follows Blue Hawaiian's Spectacular, the landing tour you can book on GetYourGuide at a shared-seat price. Treat the minutes as typical, not a timetable: Blue Hawaiian says all sights are weather dependent, and the pilot decides the order of the legs and whether the landing happens at all.

   Landing. The order of legs varies with wind and cloud; the minutes are typical, not a timetable.

The first half is the West Maui and Molokai route at 90-minute pace: the valleys of the West Maui Mountains, the Pailolo Channel and the north shore of Molokai, where the U.S. Geological Survey measures the cliffs at 3,000 to 4,000 ft (915 to 1,220 m). Then, instead of turning straight for Kahului, the aircraft heads for Ulupalakua, a working cattle ranch on the southwest slopes of Haleakalā. Blue Hawaiian describes the stop as 20 minutes with refreshments and a view of what Maui people call "both oceans", the north and south shores at once across the isthmus. A second short briefing, lift-off, and the last leg brings you back over the central plain.

Maverick's landing is a different flight altogether. Its Hāna Rainforest Experience flies east along Maui's north coast, past the surf break at Peʻahi (Jaws), Hoʻokipa and the Road to Hāna, and sets down in the rainforest for roughly 30 minutes. Maverick publishes the split: about 20 minutes of airtime each way, about 30 on the ground, 75 minutes in total. There is a champagne toast beside a stream, according to maverickhelicopter.com, and no restroom.

Air Maui's version keeps the Molokai crossing and lands on the way home at what it calls its private oceanfront location on Maui's north shore. The company sells it as a 75-minute event and says the 75 minutes run from leaving the heliport to returning, so expect the airtime to be shorter than the number suggests. Air Maui does not publish how long the stop lasts.

Ulupalakua is open pasture at altitude: wind, cattle in the distance, long views down to the coast and across to Kahoʻolawe on a clear day. It is the easiest ground to walk on. The Hāna rainforest stop is the opposite: damp, shaded, uneven, with the sound of water; Maverick recommends closed-toe shoes and warns there are no restrooms. Air Maui publishes little about its oceanfront pad beyond its north-shore location; expect a shoreline stop, not a walk.

Blue Hawaiian's FAQ warns, for any landing tour, that the ground at its remote sites can be uneven and sometimes a bit wet, closed-toe shoes are best, and bring a sweater. If anyone in your party uses a chair lift to board, note that Blue Hawaiian's lifts reach only the rear row and accommodate up to 250 lb.

Doors on, the aircraft and the seats

Every shared-cabin landing tour on Maui is doors on; only Pacific's private MD500 offers a door off. Blue Hawaiian flies its Maui tours with a mix of the Airbus EC130 Eco-Star and the Airbus AS350 A-Star, according to bluehawaiian.com; the aircraft you get is the one on the schedule that day. Air Maui flies what it calls the American Eurocopter ASTAR with six forward-facing passenger seats. Maverick says its seating is computer-generated by weight and balance and not assigned until check-in is complete.

You do not choose your seat on any of them. Blue Hawaiian sells a front-row reservation on the Spectacular at a fee, with a combined front-row weight under 470 lb and individual weights of 240 lb; exceed either at the scale and you are seated elsewhere and the upgrade fee refunded. One of the two front-seat passengers must be 15 or older and lap children are not permitted up front. Air Maui sells its two front seats only as a pair, $100 per person with a 380 lb combined limit, and only when you book direct. If a front seat is the reason you are paying landing-tour money, book direct and ask for it; GetYourGuide's listing sells a seat, not a position.

One more seating fact: on a landing tour everyone boards twice. If you are slow on uneven ground, tell the pilot at the first briefing.

When to fly

Fly the earliest departure you can get. Blue Hawaiian's own booking calendar for the Spectacular offered 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. departures on the dates we checked, and nothing later; its 50-minute flights ran from 8:00 to 11:45 a.m. The National Weather Service explains why: towering cumulus build over Hawaii's mountains and interiors on calm sunny afternoons, exactly where a landing tour spends its airtime, so the morning slot buys deeper valleys and fewer route changes. Blue Hawaiian's FAQ says most days the time of day makes no difference; the calendar says the company schedules the long tour in the morning anyway.

Season changes what you see on the ground and from the air. Winter brings fuller waterfalls on Molokai and East Maui and a chance of humpback whales in the Pailolo Channel; summer is drier with thinner falls but more reliable skies. Ulupalakua at altitude is cooler than the coast whatever the month: the National Park Service puts Haleakalā's 10,023 ft summit about 30°F cooler than sea level, and the ranch sits well below that but well above the beach. Who a landing tour is not for

Weight. Landing tours use the operator's standard thresholds. Air Maui requires a comfort seat on its doors-on flights, the oceanfront landing included, for one passenger at 240 lb or more, a couple at 420 lb combined or a group of three or more averaging 200 lb; it does not publish what the comfort seat costs. Maverick sets a 275 lb per-person maximum on Maui and requires an additional seat above it, and warns that inaccurately stated weights may be cancelled without refund. Blue Hawaiian publishes no general per-seat limit, only the front-row rule above. Pacific Helicopter Tours caps its private MD500 at 750 lb for the whole party of up to three. Weight check

Every operator weighs you at check-in and assigns seats by weight and balance. The landing tours use the same thresholds as the operator's other doors-on flights.

Figures are the operators' own published wording, checked regularly. A comfort seat is a second seat you pay for, not a penalty; what it costs is only confirmed at booking.

Age. Blue Hawaiian's and Air Maui's landing tours are open to all ages; Air Maui asks that under-13s be with an adult. Maverick requires anyone 17 or under to fly with a parent or guardian. Under FAA rules any child who has turned two occupies a paid seat at every operator; under-twos fly on a lap. The GetYourGuide premium listings show a minimum age of 13 in their availability frames.

Pregnancy. Maverick's FAQ says pregnant women fly with it often and recommends checking with your doctor first. Blue Hawaiian and Air Maui publish no pregnancy rule on the pages we checked; ask at booking.

Mobility and motion. You will climb out onto uneven ground and climb back in. Blue Hawaiian's chair lift serves the rear row only. Blue Hawaiian's FAQ says its turns are slow and gentle, and the break in the middle helps; take your usual remedy before the flight, not at the landing site.

Time. Check-in is 45 minutes before departure at Blue Hawaiian and 30 at Air Maui and Maverick, and the operators tell you not to schedule anything tight afterwards. Treat a landing tour as a half day.

The Spectacular is the clearest comparison on the site. GetYourGuide lists it at $611; Blue Hawaiian's own site shows $559 as the starting rate. That $52 buys GetYourGuide's terms: the listing shows free cancellation up to 24 hours before, where Blue Hawaiian's direct policy is 24-hour notice by phone with no-shows and late changes charged in full. The operator's weather cancellations are refunded in full either way. If a front-row seat matters, direct is the only way to reserve one.

The premium group needs a plain warning. GetYourGuide lists a 75-minute Road to Hāna helicopter with a landing in Wailua Valley at $2,303, a 55-minute two-island flight at $2,653 and a 65-minute three-island Hawaiian Odyssey at $3,353, each shown per person with a minimum age of 13. Maverick's own site lists its 75-minute Hāna Rainforest Experience from $399, its 55-minute Molokai Voyage from $399 and its 65-minute Hawaiian Odyssey from $499 per person. The durations line up; the prices are five to seven times apart. Read the GetYourGuide listing before you pay so you know whether you are buying one seat or the whole aircraft, and compare it with the private charter page, where Blue Hawaiian publishes charters from $3,900 an hour.

Air Maui's oceanfront landing is not on GetYourGuide at all; book it at airmaui.com, where the price shown was $453.74 with $518.74 struck through, or through an activity desk such as adventureinhawaii.com, which quotes agency rates including tax. Operators flying landing tours

Blue Hawaiian is the operator behind the GetYourGuide Spectacular listing and the only one landing at Ulupalakua. It began on Kauaʻi in 1982 as South Sea Helicopters, took the Blue Hawaiian name in 1985 and is now part of Air Methods, with bases on Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi and both Hilo and Waikoloa on the Big Island. Its Maui base is at 1 Lelepio Place, Kahului.

Maverick came to Maui from Las Vegas and runs the Hāna Rainforest Experience, the Molokai Voyage and the three-island Hawaiian Odyssey from the same heliport. Its published cancellation window is 72 hours and it price-matches.

Air Maui is the local company with its own terminal at the heliport, the only shared-cabin doors-off flight on the island and, on this page, the oceanfront landing. Pacific Helicopter Tours flies a three-seat MD500 privately, doors on or off, and offers its Kahakuloa cliffside landing as an add-on at checkout; its public site was partly under maintenance when we checked.

Sunshine Helicopters, still listed on some third-party pages, is no longer operating: its aircraft were sold at a bankruptcy auction and its domain now points to an unrelated site.

Getting to the Kahului Heliport

All four operators depart the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG) off Lelepio Place; the exact check-in address is on your voucher. Air Maui's directions allow 60 to 70 minutes from Lahaina, Kāʻanapali and Kapalua and 30 to 45 minutes from Kīhei and Wailea; add the check-in window. Book the 90-minute Spectacular with the Ulupalakua landing if you want a stop and you want the Molokai cliffs.

It is the only landing tour on GetYourGuide priced like a shared seat, it flies the two-island route plus 20 minutes on the ground for $611, and Blue Hawaiian's own calendar shows it as a morning departure when the air is clearest. Maverick's Hāna Rainforest Experience is the cheaper landing at $399 direct, but its airtime is about 40 minutes and it never leaves Maui.

Skip it if the landing is not the point for you (the 45-minute West Maui and Molokai flight sees the same cliffs for $396), you cannot walk on uneven ground, or your party's combined weight is close to the operator's comfort-seat line.
