What you see, minute by minute

The route is the classic West Maui and Molokai flight, described in full on the doors-on page. The log below marks what changes when the doors come off. Minute marks are typical, not a schedule; Air Maui says its routes vary with the weather.

Three parts, fifteen minutes each. The West Maui Mountains come first: the aircraft crosses the central plain in a couple of minutes and the valley walls close in. With the doors off you hear the rotor differently, you feel the air change as the helicopter drops into a valley, and there is nothing between you and the waterfalls after rain. The middle third is the crossing of the Pailolo Channel: open water, the strongest wind and the coldest air of the flight, and in winter the stretch where you look down for humpback whales. The last third is Molokai's north shore, where the U.S. Geological Survey puts the cliffs at 3,000 to 4,000 ft (915 to 1,220 m) and calls them the highest sea cliff in the world. On the edge seat you look straight down them.

What doors off changes

Photos. This is the main reason to pay the extra $56. Doors-on flights put a curved acrylic window between you and the cliffs, and the window reflects your shirt, your neighbor's shirt and the instrument panel. Air Maui tells doors-on passengers to wear dark clothing for exactly that reason. With the doors off there is nothing to reflect. Colors are truer, edges are sharper and you can shoot straight down. The limit is the camera: only a phone, in the lanyard case the crew fits to you.

Wind and noise. You are flying at speed with the side of the cabin open. Expect steady wind pressing you into the seat on the edge positions and less of it in the middle. Headsets still carry the pilot's narration and music; the rotor is louder around them. Loose things leave the cabin, which is why the belongings rule is absolute.

Cold. Air Maui issues every passenger a jacket and requires you to wear it. Take that as a sign. Morning flights are cooler, the channel crossing is the coldest stretch, and shorts are allowed but long pants are more comfortable.

Feeling. People book doors off for the sense of exposure and most describe the flight as smoother than they feared. The harness holds you; the pilot flies the same profile as the doors-on flight. If you are unsure whether you want exposure, the doors-on version of the same route is $56 cheaper and open to all ages.

Weight matters more here than on any other Maui flight. Air Maui sets its doors-off limits 10 to 20 lb below its doors-on limits (230 / 400 / 190 lb against 240 / 420 / 200) and adds a hard 250 lb line above which a comfort seat is compulsory regardless of the group total. Its FAQ states the 230 lb single-passenger line; the tour page itself names only the 250 lb ceiling, so quote both. A comfort seat is a second seat at the regular fare (Air Maui does not publish the charge), so a passenger who lands on the wrong side of the rule pays roughly double. The aircraft and the seats

Air Maui flies what it calls the American Eurocopter ASTAR, the AS350 family: six passenger seats, all facing forward, air conditioning (moot with the doors off), noise-reducing headsets. Two passengers sit up front beside the pilot; four sit across the back. With the doors removed, the two rear window positions become the edge seats.

Seats are assigned by weight and balance. The two rear window seats are the edge seats: open air on one side, and a minimum age of 16.

Guests aged 10 to 18 must be with an adult. Everyone wears the harness and the jacket Air Maui hands out.

You do not choose your seat. The operator seats the aircraft for balance at check-in, so a couple hoping for two edge seats may get one edge and one middle. Middle seats are the sheltered ones and still face open air ahead; edge seats get the full wind and the straight-down view, and need passengers aged 16 or over. If the front matters to you, book direct and pay for the front pair; Air Maui sells that upgrade itself, so ask before assuming it can be added to a GetYourGuide booking.

When to fly

Morning. The trade winds stack cloud on the West Maui summits through the day, so early flights see deeper into the valleys and get cancelled less often. For doors off there is a second reason: the morning air is calmer and cooler in a good way, while a midday flight adds heat on the ground and gustier air in the valleys. Typical trade-wind pattern, not a forecast. Air Maui decides on the day and says cloud is its usual reason to cancel.

Air Maui decides weather on the day and will fly in rain and cloud; the ceiling, not the rain, is what cancels a flight. If the operator cancels, you rebook or get a refund. If you cancel, the terms depend on where you booked.

Who this flight is not for

• Children under 10. Not allowed. Ages 10 to 18 need an adult, and nobody under 16 sits on the edge. Families with younger children take the doors-on flight, which has no minimum age.
• Anyone over 250 lb, or couples over 400 lb. You can fly, but you pay for a comfort seat. Compare the cost with a doors-on flight, where the limits are 240 / 420 / 200 lb.
• People who run cold or hate wind. The jacket is mandatory for a reason. The middle seats help, but the channel crossing is still cold at speed.
• Photographers with real cameras. The phone-only rule has no exceptions. If you need a lens, fly doors on and read the photography guide on shooting through glass.
• Pregnancy and health. Air Maui publishes no pregnancy rule for this flight, but the harness is tight, the cabin is open and there is nowhere to stop. Ask your doctor first, then the operator.
• Motion sickness. Fresh air helps some people. The edge seat with its straight-down view helps least. Eat lightly and take your remedy an hour before.

Air Maui lists the Doors Off tour at $429.99 per person on airmaui.com (shown against a struck-through $519.99), $22 under GetYourGuide's $451.99. What GetYourGuide gives you for the difference is its own cancellation policy: the feed shows free cancellation up to 24 hours before the flight, where Air Maui's direct terms are no refunds or rescheduling within 48 hours. GetYourGuide also lets you pay in your own currency and hold the seat while the rest of the trip settles. Against the doors-on version of the same route, the doors-off premium is $56 on GetYourGuide and $60 direct. For the same money as the doors-off flight you could instead buy a 50-minute doors-on flight from another operator; that trade is more minutes against no glass, and for photographers it is not close.

Who flies it

One operator. Air Maui is a local company based at the Kahului Heliport, run by its owner and chief pilot, flying the ASTAR on every route. Its home page calls this the only doors-off tour on Maui; we checked the Maui tour lists of Blue Hawaiian and Maverick and neither publishes an open-door flight. The exception is Pacific Helicopter Tours, which removes the doors on its private three-seat MD500 flights, so Air Maui's claim holds for shared-cabin tours only. All Hawaii air tours, doors on or off, fly under the FAA's Part 136 rules for the state: at or above 1,500 ft except for takeoff and landing, and with floats or flotation gear on single-engine helicopters beyond the shoreline. Getting to Kahului

The flight leaves from the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG); the exact check-in address is on your voucher. Air Maui tells drivers to allow 60 to 70 minutes from Lahaina, Kāʻanapali and Kapalua and 30 to 45 minutes from Kīhei and Wailea, and wants you there 30 minutes before the flight for the weigh-in, harness fitting and briefing.
