Air Maui Helicopters review: doors-off, routes, weight rules

Air Maui Helicopters is the small local company most people searching "air maui helicopter tours" end up flying with, whether they know it or not: the three 45-minute flights on GetYourGuide at $395.99 to $451.99 carry Air Maui's tour names to the letter, and its doors-off West Maui & Molokai tour has no shared-cabin competitor on the island (Pacific Helicopter Tours removes doors only on private three-seat flights). It suits first-time flyers who want the classic routes at the lowest published price, and photographers who want glass out of the way. Price level: mid-range for Maui, with cheaper direct fares if you accept a stricter cancellation window.

What Air Maui Helicopters actually is

Air Maui is a single-base operator at the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG), with its own terminal, sitting room and retail shop. The owner, Steve Egger, is also Chief Pilot and trains the other pilots, according to airmaui.com. The site claims more than 25 years of accident-free flying but does not publish a founding year or fleet size, so we do not either. Flights are narrated live by the pilot through noise-reducing headsets, with music in between.

The aircraft is the Airbus AS350 AStar (the site still uses the older "American Eurocopter ASTAR" name): six passenger seats, all forward-facing, air-conditioned. That matters because the two front seats sit beside the pilot and the four rear seats sit in a single row behind them, so where you sit is worked out from body weight, not preference. Air Maui does sell the two front seats as a pair for $100 per person, capped at 380 lb combined.

Routes, aircraft and rules

All flights depart Kahului and are doors on unless stated. Prices are the per-person figures shown on airmaui.com on the day we checked, with a higher list price struck through beside each one; they are Air Maui's numbers, not ours, and change without notice.

Two things on that list are unusual. The Oceanfront Landing puts down at Air Maui's private spot on Maui's north shore after the Molokai leg, which makes it one of the cheaper landing tours on the island; only Maverick's $399 Hana Rainforest Experience, with a 30-minute stop, undercuts it (see landing tours). And the Single Seat Special sells any empty seat on any flight for $100 by phone, subject to availability, for solo travelers who can be flexible on route and time. Private charters and a 30-minute "Beach Marry Me" proposal flight round out the list.

Age rules: doors-on flights take all ages, a child who has reached their second birthday needs a paid seat, and under-twos fly on a lap for free. The doors-off flight is 10 and over, with edge seats reserved for passengers 16 and over. Only a cell phone is allowed as a camera on doors off, on a lanyard Air Maui provides; no GoPro, no loose hats. Sandals are accepted only if they strap at the heel or ankle.

Air Maui weighs everyone at check-in and publishes two sets of limits, one for doors-on flights and a stricter one for the doors-off tour. Above the limit you pay for a second seat, which Air Maui calls a comfort seat.

What it costs on GetYourGuide vs booking direct

GetYourGuide lists three 45-minute Maui flights whose titles match Air Maui's tours word for word. The live listing pages block automated reading, but archived copies of all three show "Air Maui Helicopters" on the activity-provider line, so the match is as firm as we can make it without a booking. All three have free cancellation up to 24 hours before the flight:

Direct is currently $22 to $26 cheaper per seat on the 45-minute flights ($429.99 against $451.99 doors off; $369.99 against $395.99 doors on), according to airmaui.com. Against that, Air Maui's own policy is no refund and no rescheduling inside 48 hours, and a 7-day notice for groups of 12 or more. Weather cancellations by the pilot are rebooked or refunded either way. If your dates are fixed and you are sure you will fly, direct saves money; if you might change plans, the GetYourGuide flight buys flexibility for the difference. Check-in, seats, video: the practical detail

Arrive 30 minutes before departure at the Kahului Heliport; the exact check-in address is on your voucher. Wear dark, plain clothing: Air Maui says light colors and patterns reflect in the windows and end up as silhouettes in your photos. There is a safety briefing, then boarding by assigned seat. A media package from your actual flight, shot with the AStar's onboard camera system, is offered when you land; the site does not publish its price. Book one to two weeks ahead in normal times, three to four for a party of six or more.

Air Maui vs Blue Hawaiian and Maverick

Blue Hawaiian flies the same West Maui & Molokai and Hāna routes at about 50 minutes in Eco-Star and AStar cabins, from $419 direct, and adds a 90-minute tour with a landing at Ulupalakua Ranch. Maverick Helicopters starts at $399 for 55 minutes in a seven-seat Airbus 130 and publishes a simpler 275 lb per-person limit. Air Maui is the cheapest way onto a 45-minute flight, the only shared-cabin doors-off option, and the operator with the smallest scheduled cabin (Pacific Helicopter Tours flies a three-seat MD500, private only). Sunshine Helicopters, often listed alongside these three, no longer flies.
