Maui helicopter tour prices: what a ride costs and what is included

Helicopter rides in Maui cost between $284.99 and $611 a seat for a scheduled tour, and the number you pay depends on three things: airtime, doors, and whether the flight lands. On GetYourGuide the band is $395.99 for 45 minutes doors on, $451.99 for 45 minutes doors off, $459 for 50 minutes and $611 for 90 minutes with a landing at Ulupalakua Ranch. Direct with the operators, Air Maui runs from $284.99 (30 minutes) to $484.99 (60 minutes), Blue Hawaiian from $419 (about 50 minutes) to $559 (90 minutes with a landing), Maverick from $399 to $499. Prices are checked regularly; the operator figures are as shown on their sites on the day we checked.

Two patterns show up. Doors off costs about $60 more than the same route doors on, on both channels. And Air Maui shows a struck-through "list" price next to every fare; the lower number is what the booking engine charges, so treat the list price as marketing, not a discount.

The 45-minute tier is where most people should be looking. Both doors-on flights are $395.99 on GetYourGuide; the West Maui and Molokai route crosses to a second island, the Hāna and Haleakalā route stays on Maui but adds the crater. The doors-off flight at $451.99 is the only shared-cabin open-door tour on the island; Pacific Helicopter Tours removes doors only on private three-seat flights.

The premium listings are a different product: $2,303 to $3,353 shown per person, minimum age 13, "small group" label. Their names and durations match Maverick's three Maui tours, which Maverick sells from $399 to $499 a seat on its own site, and an archived copy of one listing showed a per-person price in that range. Whether the live figures cover one seat, a small group or the whole aircraft is not stated on the listing; read what the price covers before paying. The private charter page sets them against a whole-aircraft charter ($1,450 an hour for Pacific Helicopter Tours' three-seat MD500, $3,200 an hour for Air Maui's six-seat AStar) and explains what to check before you assume the helicopter is yours alone.

What the price includes, and what it does not

Included in every scheduled fare we checked: the seat, the pre-flight briefing, a headset with pilot narration and music, and airtime as advertised (Air Maui's 75-minute "event" is the whole landing experience, not 75 minutes in the air).

Not included:

• The in-flight video. Blue Hawaiian's four-camera recording and Air Maui's media package are optional purchases at the desk after the flight; prices are quoted there.
• The front seats. Air Maui sells the two front seats as a pair for $200 ($100 a person) with a combined limit of 380 lb; the booking engine offers it as a "Front Seat Upgrade". Blue Hawaiian reserves front-row seats for a premium fee, refunded if you exceed its published weights at check-in. On a GetYourGuide booking you get the seat the pilot assigns.
• A comfort seat. The big one; see below.
• Parking. Maverick's FAQ says the heliport lot is privately run by ABM Parking Services with a self-service pay booth (cards, or cash without change). The Kahului Heliport page covers the practicalities.
• Getting there. No hotel transfers; Maverick says so explicitly. Budget a rental car or rideshare.

Fuel surcharge. None is published on airmaui.com, bluehawaiian.com or maverickhelicopter.com, and Air Maui's booking engine carries the tour-page fare straight into the total. If a reseller quotes you a "fuel surcharge" on top, compare the total with the operator's site before paying.

The extra-seat charge

Helicopters are weight-limited, and every operator weighs you at check-in. Above a published threshold you are charged for a second seat, which Air Maui calls a comfort seat. This is the fee that turns a $369.99 flight into a $739.98 one, and it is the reason the weight rules page exists.

If you book through GetYourGuide and the operator charges a comfort seat at check-in, that charge is paid to the operator on the day; the platform price covers one seat. Read the listing's "important information" for the operator's exact wording.

GetYourGuide vs direct vs Costco vs Groupon

Direct. Cheapest on the fare for Air Maui's flights: $369.99 against $395.99 for the 45-minute routes, $429.99 against $451.99 doors off. You accept the operator's terms: Air Maui gives no refunds or rescheduling within 48 hours (7 days for groups of 12 or more); Blue Hawaiian needs 24 hours' notice and charges no-shows in full; Maverick allows no changes or cancellations within 72 hours and advertises a price-match offer. All three reschedule or refund when the pilot cancels for weather. Air Maui's online engine takes bookings from two guests; single travellers call.

GetYourGuide. Costs about $26 more a seat on the 45-minute routes and $22 more doors off. For that you get the platform's cancellation terms (shown on each listing; they differ from the operator's 24-, 48- or 72-hour rules), payment in your own currency, a voucher on your phone and a support line that is not the operator when a flight is cancelled and you need to rebook or get money back. Costco Travel. People search "maui helicopter tours costco" because members expect a warehouse discount. Costco Travel's own Maui and Hawaii pages sell vacation packages, hotels, rental cars and cruises; at the time of checking they listed no Maui helicopter tour, and the only "helicopter" on the Hawaii page is a line about Kauaʻi in the destination text. Activities are sold separately through a co-branded Viator site where Costco says members save 15% at checkout, and Costco's own terms exclude third-party tours from the Executive 2% reward. So a "Costco" helicopter price is Viator's price less 15%; Viator's starting price may sit above the operator's, so check the current listing against the operator's site and read which operator, route and cancellation terms the voucher carries.

Groupon. Groupon lists Hawaii helicopter deals, most of them resold operator tours. The Maui listings we saw were Air Maui's 30-minute Bird's Eye View at $315.99 (the operator's own site showed $284.99) and a Maverick Molokai and Maui flight at $404.12 (Maverick's site said from $399), each with a "10% cashback" tag rather than a price cut. The cashback is a Groupon promotion with its own terms; the voucher is issued by the operator, Groupon's refund policy gives three days to return an unredeemed voucher, and making a dated booking can end that right. The weight and cancellation rules are still the operator's. Check the current listing and the operator's site side by side.

Real ways to pay less

1. Single Seat Special. Air Maui fills spare seats for $100 on any of its flights, subject to availability, booked by phone; you take the route and time that has a gap. The best helicopter deal on Maui if your schedule is loose.
2. Fly shorter. Air Maui's 30-minute Bird's Eye View at $284.99 covers the West Maui coast and beaches; the 45-minute West Maui and Molokai Special at $369.99 direct or $395.99 on GetYourGuide adds the Molokai cliffs. The 60-minute flights add airtime over the same ground.
3. Skip the front-seat upgrade. Every seat in the AStar faces forward with no cabin partition; the $200 pair buys the glass ahead of you, not a different flight.
4. Fly early, early in your stay. Morning slots are cancelled less often, and a cancelled flight on your last day means no flight at all; see the best time page.
5. Three people? Price the private three-seater. Pacific Helicopter Tours sells its MD500 by the flight, not the seat: $1,450 for 60 minutes split three ways is about $483 each, close to a shared 60-minute seat, with the whole aircraft, a guaranteed window and doors on or off included. Its home page currently shows a maintenance notice while the tour pages work, so confirm by phone before you plan around it.
6. Watch the "air maui discount" searches. Air Maui's site shows a struck-through list price and a lower fare on every tour; that lower fare is the everyday price, and there is no published coupon code. Discount codes offered by third-party sites should be checked against the operator's page before you trust them.

Helicopter ride Maui cost: the short answer

Budget $400 a seat for 45 minutes doors on, $450 doors off, $460 for 50 minutes and $560 to $611 for a landing tour, plus $200 if you want the front row and a second seat if your party is over the weight lines. Book direct with Air Maui to save about $26 a seat, or on GetYourGuide for the platform's cancellation terms and support. Either way the pilot, the aircraft and the view are the same.
