Molokai's north shore, the turnaround point of the classic 45-minute Maui flights

Maui helicopter tours come in four shapes: a 45-minute run to the West Maui Mountains and Molokai, the same route with the doors off, a 45-minute flight to Hāna and the Haleakalā crater, and a 60- to 90-minute circle of the island, sometimes with a landing. All of them lift off from the Kahului Heliport next to Kahului Airport (OGG). On GetYourGuide the 45-minute flights cost $395.99 doors on and $451.99 doors off, per person, prices checked regularly. Below is the whole board, then the briefing every pilot gives before the rotors turn.

The four route families, and what each one shows you

West Maui and Molokai, 45 minutes, doors on. The classic helicopter ride over Maui. You climb over the West Maui Mountains, cross the Pailolo Channel and run along Molokai's north shore, where the National Park Service says Kalaupapa National Historical Park holds some of the world's tallest sea cliffs. Waterfalls thread the valleys after rain. It is the cheapest 45-minute flight on GetYourGuide, tied with the Hāna route, and the one we send most first-timers to: West Maui and Molokai.

Doors off, 45 minutes. Same route, no glass. Air Maui runs it and says on its own site that it is the only doors-off tour on Maui; the one exception is Pacific Helicopter Tours, which removes doors only on private three-seat flights. You get glare-free photos, wind in the cabin and a stricter rulebook: phone on a lanyard only, no bags or hats, closed shoes, a jacket the operator hands you, minimum age 10. Read the doors-off page before you book the doors-off flight.

Hāna and Haleakalā, 45 minutes. East instead of west: up the slopes of Haleakalā to the crater rim (the summit is 10,023 feet, per the National Park Service), then down the Kīpahulu coast past the Hāna rainforest and its waterfalls. It replaces a ten-hour drive with 45 minutes in the air, and loses the roadside swims. Details on Hāna and Haleakalā.

Complete island and landing tours, 60 to 90 minutes. Air Maui's Complete Island joins West Maui, Haleakalā and Hāna in one 60-minute flight, listed at $484.99 direct according to airmaui.com. Blue Hawaiian's 90-minute Maui and Molokai Spectacular and GetYourGuide's 90-minute Spectacular tour add a landing on the slopes of Haleakalā. See complete island and landing tours.

GetYourGuide or direct? When we checked, airmaui.com showed its 45-minute doors-on flights at $369.99 (regular price $449.99 struck through) against $395.99 on GetYourGuide, and the doors-off flight at $429.99 (regular $519.99) against $451.99. Blue Hawaiian's 50-minute Maui flights start at $419 and Maverick's 55- and 75-minute flights at $399 on their own sites. Direct also unlocks extras such as Air Maui's two front seats, $100 per person with a combined limit of 380 lb. GetYourGuide's case is the cancellation window printed on the listing, payment in your currency and one account for the rest of the trip. The operator's own rule is tighter: Air Maui gives no refund or reschedule inside 48 hours, Blue Hawaiian inside 24. Weather cancellations are refunded or rebooked by every operator.

The pilot's briefing: three things before you book

Fly in the morning

Trade winds push cloud onto the mountains through the day, so the first departures usually get the clearest crater and the cleanest cliff light. Operators word it differently: Blue Hawaiian's FAQ says the time of day rarely matters on a normal day, while Maverick schedules its Maui flights from early morning to mid-afternoon specifically to dodge cloud cover. Air Maui says cloud, not rain, is what cancels a tour. Our reading of that is below; the long version is on best time to fly and sunset flights.

Sky by time of day

Typical trade-wind pattern, not a forecast. Blue Hawaiian's FAQ says time of day rarely matters on a normal day; Maverick schedules Maui flights from early morning to mid-afternoon to avoid cloud build-up. Pilots decide on the day.

  1. 07–09BestFirst departures. Coolest air, least cloud over the West Maui Mountains and Haleakalā.
  2. 09–11BestStill good on most days; the busiest slots.
  3. 11–13GoodTrade-wind cloud starts to cap the summits and the Hāna side.
  4. 13–15MixedMixed. Operators reroute around cloud; some cancel.
  5. 15–17MixedLate slots exist but carry the highest cancellation risk.

Weigh in before you pay

Every operator weighs you at check-in and seats the aircraft by weight and balance, not by request. Air Maui publishes the clearest rule: on doors-on flights a comfort seat is charged for one passenger at 240 lb or more, a pair at 420 lb or more, or a group of three or more averaging 200 lb; on the doors-off flight those numbers drop to 230, 400 and 190, and anyone over 250 lb must buy the extra seat. Maverick sets a flat 275 lb per-person maximum, above which you buy an additional seat. Blue Hawaiian publishes no general limit, only front-row caps of 250 lb per person in the AStar and 260 lb in the Eco-Star, and seats everyone by its weight-and-balance program. The rule is a charge, not a refusal: you pay for the second seat, and the surprise at the counter is what fills the one-star reviews. The weight-restrictions page has the table and a calculator.

One heliport, allow for the drive

Kahului Heliport sits beside Kahului Airport (OGG) in the middle of the island. According to airmaui.com, allow 60 to 70 minutes from Lahaina, Kāʻanapali or Kapalua and 30 to 45 from Kīhei or Wailea. Air Maui wants you 30 minutes before departure, Blue Hawaiian 45. Directions, parking and what to do nearby are on Kahului Heliport and from Lahaina and Wailea.

Who actually flies from Kahului

Three companies run scheduled helicopter tours in Maui Hawaii today. Air Maui is the local operator, flies the Airbus AStar with up to six passengers, is named as the activity provider on archived copies of the three 45-minute GetYourGuide listings, and says it holds the only doors-off flight on the island: true for shared-cabin tours, with the private exception below. Blue Hawaiian began on Kauaʻi in 1982, took its current name in 1985 and is the only company with bases on Oʻahu, Maui, Kauaʻi and the Big Island; on Maui it flies both AStars and Eco-Stars on four routes. Maverick, the Las Vegas company, runs three Maui flights from its own Kahului hangar from $399. Sunshine Helicopters, still listed in many older guides, is no longer operating: its aircraft were sold at a bankruptcy-court auction and its old web address now points elsewhere. Pacific Helicopter Tours flies private-only trips in a three-seat MD500, doors on or off, from its own tours site. Both are covered on the operators hub.

Commercial air tours in the United States are regulated under 14 CFR Part 136, which applies to Part 135 certificate holders and to Part 91 operators flying under a letter of authorization, and Hawaii has its own subpart: a 1,500-foot minimum altitude except for takeoff and landing, an air-traffic clearance or an FAA authorization, flotation gear on single-engine helicopters beyond the shoreline, and a mandatory ditching briefing before any flight segment beyond the shore. The pilot, not the booking desk, decides whether the flight goes. Wondering how to judge one operator against another? Start with compare routes and the reviews.

After the flight

A helicopter ride in Maui is over by 10 a.m. if you take the first slot, which leaves a full day. The pairings that work: a Molokini snorkel or a whale-watch out of Māʻalaea (humpback season runs November through May, with the peak from January to March, according to NOAA), or the Road to Hāna by van on another day now that you have seen it from above. More on other Maui tours.

Maui helicopter tours are a $400 to $600 decision per seat. Pick the route from the grid above, check the weight rule against your party, book a morning slot, and read the cancellation terms of whichever channel you use. That is the whole briefing.

Questions pilots get asked

How much does a helicopter tour of Maui cost?

On GetYourGuide the 45-minute flights are $395.99 doors on and $451.99 doors off, the 50-minute flights $459, and the 90-minute flight with a landing at Ulupalakua Ranch $611, per person. Booked direct, airmaui.com listed its 45-minute flights at $369.99 and Blue Hawaiian its 50-minute flights from $419 when we checked. Prices are checked regularly.

Which Maui helicopter tour is best for a first visit?

The 45-minute West Maui and Molokai flight. It covers the West Maui Mountains, the Pailolo Channel and Molokai's north-shore sea cliffs, which the National Park Service describes as some of the world's tallest, at the lowest 45-minute price on GetYourGuide.

Where do Maui helicopter tours depart from?

Every scheduled tour we found departs the Kahului Heliport, next to Kahului Airport (OGG) in central Maui. Air Maui, Blue Hawaiian and Maverick all check in there. The exact hangar address is on your voucher.

Is there a weight limit on Maui helicopter tours?

Yes, and it is enforced at check-in on a scale. Air Maui charges a comfort seat when one passenger is 240 lb or more on doors-on flights (230 lb doors off), when a couple totals 420 lb or more (400 lb doors off), or when a group of three or more averages 200 lb (190 lb doors off). Blue Hawaiian assigns seats through an FAA-approved weight and balance program. Our weight page has every rule.

Doors on or doors off?

Doors off gives glare-free photos and the full sensation of flight, but only a phone on a lanyard is allowed, the operator sets a minimum age of 10, and closed shoes and a provided jacket are mandatory. Doors on suits families, anyone who runs cold and anyone bringing a real camera.

Is booking on GetYourGuide better than booking direct?

Direct is often a few dollars cheaper and unlocks front-seat upgrades. GetYourGuide gives you one booking account, payment in your own currency and the cancellation window printed on the listing, which differs from the operator's own 24- or 48-hour rule. Read both before you pay.
