The best helicopter tour in Maui is not one flight but a short decision tree. West or east decides what you see; doors on or off decides how you see it; 45, 60 or 90 minutes decides what you pay. Eight routes cover every combination that the three operators at Kahului Heliport actually fly. Route by route: the honest one-paragraph version

West Maui and Molokai (45 min). The classic helicopter ride in Maui, and for good reason: within minutes you are inside the valleys of the West Maui Mountains, and the Molokai leg shows you cliffs that the National Park Service describes as some of the world's tallest, dropping straight into the Pacific at Kalaupapa National Historical Park. GetYourGuide lists it at $395.99 as the West Maui and Molokai Special, the name Air Maui uses for its own 45-minute flight; Blue Hawaiian's 50-minute version starts at $419 direct and Maverick's Molokai Voyage at $399.

Doors off (45 min). Identical geography, different flight. Air Maui states on its site that it operates the only doors-off tour on Maui; the only other open-door option is a private three-seat MD500 flight with Pacific Helicopter Tours. The rules are the trade-off: phone on a supplied lanyard as the only camera, closed shoes, no hats or bags, a mandatory jacket, minimum age 10, and a tighter weight rule (comfort seat from 230 lb per person, 400 lb per pair, and compulsory for anyone over 250 lb). It costs $451.99 as the doors-off flight.

Hāna and Haleakalā (45 min). The east-side answer. The crater sits at a 10,023-foot summit according to the National Park Service, and the drop from the rim to the Kīpahulu coast is the most dramatic minute of any Maui flight. It is the route to pick if you have already driven the west side or if the Road to Hāna day is not in your plans. Book it at $395.99.

Complete island (60 min). Air Maui's Complete Island stitches the West Maui Mountains, the Haleakalā crater and the Hāna coast into one hour, listed at $484.99 per person on airmaui.com. Blue Hawaiian's 50-minute Haleakalā and West Maui tour and its 50-minute Hāna Rainforest flight each cover part of that ground for $419 direct, and Maverick's 65-minute Hawaiian Odyssey trades the east side for Molokai and Lānaʻi at $499. GetYourGuide does not list a plain 60-minute circle; its nearest product is the 90-minute Spectacular with a landing, below.

Landing tours (75–90 min). Two shapes. GetYourGuide's Maui and Molokai Spectacular at $611 flies the western route and sets down at Ulupalakua Ranch on Haleakalā's slopes for 1.5 hours total. The premium Road to Hāna landing tour at $2,303 lands in the Wailua Valley; the listing shows the price per person; read what the price covers before you book. Air Maui's own 75-minute West Maui and Molokai flight with an oceanfront landing is listed at $453.74 direct.

Big Island volcano. Older guides say Blue Hawaiian flies from Maui to Kīlauea. Its current Maui catalogue lists four Kahului departures and none of them leaves the island; its FAQ says lava can only be seen on Big Island tours, and never guaranteed. We keep the page because people search for it, and it explains the real options.

Sunset flights. None of the three operators lists a sunset or evening product on its Maui tours page. Blue Hawaiian's booking calendar shows morning slots only, Maverick says it flies from early morning to mid-afternoon, and Air Maui's latest published slots are afternoon; there is no scheduled sunset flight to book. Late slots are the ones most exposed to the afternoon cloud build-up that cancels flights, which is why our sunset page also argues for the first flight of the morning.

Private charter. Air Maui publishes $3,200 per hour, doors on or off, up to six passengers, any destination in Hawaii; Blue Hawaiian quotes charters from $3,900 per hour; Pacific Helicopter Tours sells only private flights, in a three-seat MD500 with doors on or off, its 90-minute Complete Island at $2,175 for one to three passengers. "Safest helicopter tour in Maui": what can actually be checked

People search for the safest helicopter tour in Maui, and no honest page can rank the operators. There is no public safety league table for Hawaii air-tour companies, and we will not build one from anecdotes. What exists is a rulebook that applies to all of them. Commercial air tours fall under 14 CFR Part 136, which covers Part 135 certificate holders and Part 91 operators with a letter of authorization. Hawaii's subpart adds a 1,500-foot minimum altitude except for takeoff, landing, an air-traffic clearance or an FAA authorization, flotation equipment on single-engine helicopters beyond the shoreline, and a ditching briefing before any flight segment beyond the shore. Every route in the table has an over-water leg.

What you can do as a passenger: confirm the company you are actually flying with (resellers sell the same seats), read its weather and cancellation policy, note that seats are assigned by weight and balance rather than preference, listen to the briefing, and wear what the operator tells you to wear. 3. You are driving the Road to Hāna anyway? Fly west. If you are not, fly Hāna and Haleakalā instead and drive nowhere.
4. You want both sides or a landing? Book the 60-minute circle direct, or the 90-minute Spectacular on GetYourGuide.

Then check the one thing the routes do not change: the scale at check-in. Air Maui's doors-on comfort-seat rule starts at 240 lb per person or 420 lb per pair; the doors-off rule is tighter.
