Hawaii Helicopters on Maui: no such operator, here is who you mean

There is no helicopter tour operator called Hawaii Helicopters on Maui. We checked the way we check every company: on its own website, on the platforms that sell Maui seats, and at the one heliport every scheduled tour departs from. The name turned up in exactly one place, a web address that forwards you straight to Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. This page is short because the honest answer is short: here is where the name comes from, what happened to the company it is sometimes confused with, and which of the four operators actually flying you probably want. Where the name comes from

Our briefing listed "Hawaii Helicopters (ex-Sunshine)" as a Maui operator to review. Three things can produce a name like that, and we tested each.

A rename. Sunshine Helicopters, a company based at the Kahului Heliport that was still selling flights from Kahului, Kauaʻi and the Big Island in the archived copy of its site we could read, did not become anything. Its aircraft, engines, parts inventory and hangar equipment were sold at a court-ordered auction held at Hangar 107 of the Kahului Heliport by order of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for Hawaii (case 1:24-bk-00989), and its old address, sunshinehelicopters.com, now redirects to businesses that have nothing to do with aviation. A domain. The address hawaiihelicopters.com exists and, when you type it, delivers you to bluehawaiian.com, the site of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. It behaved the same way in the archived copy we could read. Who registered it is not public, so we do not claim ownership; we report the redirect.

A search habit. People who want a helicopter tour anywhere in Hawaii type "Hawaii helicopters" and land on whichever company ranks. On Maui that is usually Blue Hawaiian, the only operator here that also flies on Oʻahu, Kauaʻi and the Big Island, or Air Maui, the biggest local brand.

If "Hawaii Helicopters" in your head means the company with bases on all four main islands, that is Blue Hawaiian. If it means the local Maui outfit with the open doors, that is Air Maui. If it means the first-class front seats or the Kapalua departure Sunshine used to advertise, neither exists on Maui today: Air Maui sells its two front seats as a paid pair, and every operator departs Kahului.

How to tell a live operator from a ghost

Sunshine's disappearance is a useful lesson, because third-party pages, activity desks and some reseller sites still show its tours months after the auction. Before you pay anyone for a Maui helicopter seat, check four things.

1. The operator's own website resolves and has a booking calendar. A redirect to an unrelated business, a parking page or a maintenance notice on the home page is a reason to phone first. This is also why our Pacific Helicopter Tours review tells you to call.
2. The hangar is named. Air Maui, Blue Hawaiian and Maverick all publish a Lelepio Place address at the Kahului Heliport; Pacific publishes Hangar 109. A seller who cannot tell you where you check in cannot fly you.
3. The platform names the provider. GetYourGuide's Maui helicopter listings each carry an "Activity provider" line; archived copies of the nine current ones name Air Maui, Blue Hawaiian or Maverick. Our GetYourGuide review covers the catalogue listing by listing.
4. The certificate can be asked for. Commercial air tours fall under 14 CFR Part 136, flown by Part 135 certificate holders or Part 91 operators with a letter of authorization. None of the four Maui operators prints a certificate number on its tour pages; Blue Hawaiian publishes its voluntary FAA safety programs and Pacific describes the FAA briefing at check-in. Ask if it matters to you.

What to book instead
